Challenges
Like any large-scale global organization with thousands of volunteers, staff, and individuals to take care of, UNHCR recognized the necessity of establishing a universal platform. The goal was to enhance efficiency and minimize errors across the board. Some of the challenges being tackled in this project were:
- Lack of a centralized and dynamic system for managing and disseminating real-time information on global refugee situations.
- Inefficient content organization and retrieval processes for UNHCR administrators.
Solution
To overcome the above-mentioned challenges, Hexis created The Global Refugees Status Information Website which serves as a comprehensive resource for both the public and UNHCR staff. It provides real-time updates on refugee situations worldwide, offering not only the latest statistics but also news, relevant URLs, compelling visualizations, and more. The platform encourages easy sharing on social media, facilitating the dissemination of critical information. This was done by:
- Implementation of the Operational Data Portal (ODP) featuring over 40,000 indexed refugee records, including PDF reports, Excel spreadsheets, Word documents, and various image formats.
- Utilization of advanced technology to extract and index content within documents, enabling a thorough and easily accessible search mechanism.
Outcome
The implementation of the changes brought to life a user-friendly website with the following characteristics.
- Efficient and dynamic content tagging and grouping mechanism for retrieving pertinent information related to specific situations, locations, or countries.
- Empowered UNHCR administrators to establish new situations and gather relevant information within minutes.
- Enhanced accessibility and dissemination of critical information to the general public and UNHCR staff.
The Operational Data Portal (ODP) stands as a dynamic solution to address the evolving nature of global refugee crises. By providing real-time information, advanced content indexing, and streamlined data retrieval, the ODP ensures a responsive and agile approach to managing and disseminating critical information. The platform not only meets the immediate needs of UNHCR administrators but also contributes to a broader goal of raising awareness and facilitating informed decision-making on global refugee situations.
